This
NASA funded workshop is an ongoing workshop for middle and high school
science teachers who teach Astronomy/Space Science. A Summer Workshop,
led by Dr. Sanjay S. Limaye, is planned for August 11-15th in Madison and
will feature presentations by experts on Space Science topics useful for
teacher background knowledge, curriculum planning, and student resources
available for teachers. Hands On Universe Program will be introduced if
there is sufficient interest.
The
workshop will also include tours of regional observatories/telescopes and
some exposure to use of remote telescopes from schools. Additional 1-day
follow-up meetings (Saturdays) are planned during Fall 2003 and Winter/Spring
2004. Graduate Credit is available through University of Wisconsin-Madison
through a Distance Learning Program (teachers must register with UW-Madison
and pay the appropriate tuition fee to receive credit). Currently teachers
from Madison, Eau Claire, Milwaukee, Hayward and Northbrook, Illinois are
participating in this workshop.
Who
is eligible?
This
extended workshop targets teachers who are interested in creating a new
Astronomy/Space Science course in their high school as well as middle school
teachers who are interested in including current Space Science knowledge
in their curriculum. A modest stipend will be paid to teachers who actively
participate in all workshop activities (1-week summer and at least four
follow up sessions during the 2003-2004 school year). An application
to participate is now online, but is under construction so it will
need to be printed off and sent in.
