The Office of Space Science Education (OSSE) was established within
the Space Science & Engineering Center (SSEC)
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to conduct K-12 education and
public outreach programs. OSSE strongly emphasizes partnerships between
scientists and teachers in local and regional schools to develop
standards-based programs that achieve the mutual objective of improving
the level of literacy for science, math and technology education.
Planetary Scientist,
Dr. Sanjay Limaye
is Director for the OSSE. Ms.
Rosalyn Pertzborn is our Research Specialist and Outreach
Coordinator. Margaret Mooney
also functions in an Outreach capacity helping to plan and manage OSSE
programs and activities.
The
Office of Space Science Education is dedicated to the belief that these
state and national goals will be achieved by sharing the excitement
of new discoveries acquired through space exploration and earth remote
sensing research. Currently OSSE is supporting faculty from Space
Physics and the AOS
Departments on the UW-Madison campus for education and outreach activities.
Besides providing outreach support to the Cooperative Institute for
Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)
and the Antarctic Astronomy and Astrophysics Research
Institute (A³RI), OSSE also collaborates with other UW-Madison
departments such as Astronomy
(Space Astronomy Laboratory
and the Space Place),
Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences,
Physics, and Geology
& Geophysics.
OSSE programs encompass
the multidisciplinary areas of space science including; earth systems
science, atmospheric science, solar system exploration, astronomy and
astrophysics. OSSE is engaged in community programs, teacher development
programs in earth and space science, K-12 student programs and science
museum programs in partnership with state and national organizations.
OSSE programs and activities are supported by funds from NASA,
NOAA, and the University
of Wisconsin - Madison.
