The first few days of life in Antarctica involve a lot of paperwork, meetings and training. For instance, yesterday we had a in brief where we tell the contractors and NSF representative in Antarctica what we want to accomplish well we are here. Then in the afternoon we attended a field safety refresher course, this course is meant to teach you some rudimentary skills that will allow you to survive in the Antarctic if you are involved in an accident. Today we continued with training for waste management and driving equipment (trucks and snowmobiles) in Antarctica. Waste management in Antarctica is a little more complicated than in the states. All solid waste in Antarctica is retrograded to the US. Therefore it is very important that the waste be sorted so that it can be efficiently recycled and disposed. I think that completes our bureaucratic tasks before you can get some work done. The rest of the afternoon involved accumulating all of our equipment into our lab space, unpacking our cargo, and beginning to get the parts ready for our station visits.
