Hello All! Just a combined note on my 4th and 5th days here at McMurdo Station. Yesterday, I got to briefly visit the neighbors next door, the New Zealand Antarctic Program's station, Scott Base. It is much smaller than the US station here, but this year has a better store to get "goodies" and souvenirs in. It was neat to see the other site of the "Hut Point" on the "island" that we are located on (McMurdo and Scott are on Ross Island on the edge of the Ross Iceshelf). The weather has continued to be very nice, and currently is 13 degrees out, with the winds nearly calm, and it is mostly sunny, with a few clouds around - especially near the tops of the mountains, and the active volcano that is on the island here (Mt. Erebus). I'm currently scoping out my work here, as well as hoping to get the chance to do a few items things, such as journey out to one of the nearby Automatic Weather Stations, along with a walk to Hut Point and to the top of Observation Hill - which is rather high, overlooking McMurdo Station. Here is an image that depicts my flight down from Madison WI/Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA to Auckland, NZ to Christchurch, NZ to McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Click on it to enlarge This image also shows the approximate miles covered. Until next message! Matthew |
