Just a quick note to fill you all in on the latest interesting topic at the Wednesday Science lecture I went to this week. I got to learn and see how the fish that live out here in McMurdo Sound are able to live in supercooled or water that is still liquid, yet its temperature is still below freezing. The fish are able not to freeze, even though they can if they get "iced" up. Fish are able to remove ice, which is in the waters here, even in small ice crystals, via the use of anti-freezes. They use the anti-freeze to bind to the ice crystals in the water and help remove it from the fishes system. They are sill studying how that is done. They also have discovered that the anti-freezes in the fish here, have to inhibit the growth of ice. Some very interesting stuff. I hope you all enjoy this interesting tip for the day. Matthew |
